Originally from India, she grew up in Toronto, Canada, earning her medical doctorate at Windsor University School of Medicine, St. Kitts, West Indies. She completed her Family Medicine residency at the University of North Dakota's Center for Family Medicine in Minot, where she was elected Chief Resident her final year.
